When duty calls

MIDRAND – A CPF, Saps and Metro police joint operation resulted in 21 arrests in Midrand for drunken driving.

A joint operation was held involving the Community Policing Forum (CPF), South Africa Police Service and Metro Police on 21 October.

As part of the Duty Calls operations, road blocks were set up and drivers were randomly tested for drinking and driving. About 21 people were arrested in Midrand for drinking and driving.

“As we head into the festive season, we are committed to ensuring the safety of our community at home and on the roads. We will, therefore, have a zero tolerance policy where people endanger others by drinking and driving,” said Captain Ignatius Molepo, head of social crime prevention.

Duty Calls operations were held throughout the regions for the week ending 23 October.

The following arrests for drunk driving took place in the different regions:

Region A

Midrand – 21

Region B

Randburg – 21

Region C

Roodepoort – 23

Region D

Soweto – 34

Region E

Eastgate – 18

Region F1

Joburg – 16

Region F2

Rosettenville – 8

Region G

Lenasia and Orange Farm – 21.

The operations are one part of operation Duty Calls and will continue until way after the festive season. Residents are urged to not drink and drive and to abide by all aspects of the law.
