38 Households receive title deeds

MIDRAND – Members of political parties unite to hand out title deeds to people in Ivory Park.

Thirty-eight households received long-awaited title deeds in Ivory Park and the new Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba, along with members of political parties, were present to witness the occasion.

Mashaba, “[I am] deeply humbled to be able to provide residents of Ivory Park with the dignity of owning their own homes.”

He revealed that the Department of Housing is currently in the process of allocating more than 2 000 title deeds to residents of Johannesburg. These are title deeds that will be provided to residents without any conditions of political support and, once delivered, no government will ever be able to threaten their right to own their homes.

“The new administration in our City has an enormous task ahead of us as we work tirelessly to deliver better services to our residents, especially the poor. Ivory Park is a community that suffers from high unemployment, poverty and a lack of basic services. These are issues that I am dedicated to resolving to ensure that we create a fairer, more equal and integrated city for all our people,” said the Mayor.

“Having the title deed to your home is more than just possessing a piece of paper. It provides residents with an asset which they can pass on to their children and grandchildren. It is also a means of unlocking economic potential and empowers people to pull themselves out of poverty.”

A resident, who did not want to be named, shared that during the event, a handful of people at the back of the hall where the handover took place, tried to disrupt the event but failed after they were jeered at by the community, and did not take anything away from the celebratory mood.

Mayoral director of communications, Tony Taverna-Turisan said, “This event was not about any political party, but rather it was about the government delivering on its promises to its residents.”
