City will not fund Salga

JOBURG – Mayor Herman Mashaba made the announcement on 11 October.

The City of Johannesburg will provide no further funding for the South African Local Government Association (Salga).

This announcement was made by the City’s Mayor Herman Mashaba on 11 October citing that the efficacy of the association has been in question for some time.

Mashaba said the City will not fund or contribute to the Salga National Congress, to be held later in the year in Johannesburg. “To do so when many of our residents are living in conditions of poverty and inequality would plainly be wrong, and we cannot justify providing such funding to Salga,” he said.

The City’s previous administration’s Parks Tau, was recently appointed the chairperson of Salga in Gauteng. “There is much that suggests that it has become an instrument for the deployment of cadres of the majority party in our country. This was starkly illustrated by the recent Gauteng provincial executive of Salga,” Mashaba said.

Salga advises and supports policy analysis, research and monitoring, knowledge exchange and provides support to local government.

“Everything we do must be done in the best interests of our residents,” Mashaba said.

Randburg Sun has approached Salga for comment.
