Blast gone wrong

MIDRAND – Blast at shopping centre leaves customers' vehicles damaged.

Project managers of Betts Townshed Construction Management, the company conducting construction at Midway Mews shopping centre, have acknowledged that a blast took place on 20 September which resulted in damage to nearby vehicles.

Hendor Drilling and Blasting is the company which conducted the blast.

According to Asha Jagaroo, one of the motorists whose vehicles was damaged during the explosion, said she was walking towards her car when she witnessed concrete pieces smashing her back window and boot. In response to this, Gavin Sleater of Betts Townshed said it was rock pieces which damaged vehicles.

Sleater said he was unable to reveal the details of the incident as the matter was still under investigation. Hendor Drilling and Blasting’s insurance company, CDI insurance brokers, are dealing with the case.

Carla Lopes from CDI said they were instructed by Hendor Drilling and Blasting to seek the relevant documentation from affected motorists and assist with the resolving of the matter. Whether or not the affected parties have been, or would be, compensated and how much the compensation would be, was not revealed as investigations are still underway.

Jagaroo explained that she would be losing her insurance no-claim bonus because of this.

Midrand Reporter contacted management at Midway Mews shopping centre on numerous occasions, however, management was unable to comment on the matter by the time of publication.
