Importance of safe school transport

MIDRAND – Midrand Learner Transport Association held a meeting with parents and transport owners to talk about the importance of legal and safe school transport.

The attendance was poor and resulted in a delayed start to the gathering headed by Brian Govender, public relations officer for the association. Both Ward 112 councillor, Madeleine Hicklin and Ward 132 councillor, Annette Deppe were present at the meeting and delivered some keynote addresses to the attendees.

Govender emphasised the role played by the transport association in the community to ensure the safety of children. “The MLTA is currently working to remove children from prostitution rings operating in the area, which affect the school performance of the child,” he said.

The duties of parents when choosing scholar transport were thoroughly discussed and parents have to check the following:

The transport association’s public relations officer said that people with a criminal record can’t get a PDP, therefore, all drivers under the association do not have criminal records and all vehicles are regularly checked to establish roadworthiness.

All transport under the association is required to have the medical aid details of each pupil they transport and ensure the safe arrival of every child to and from school.

Deppe discussed how roads around schools should be improved to be more user-friendly for children walking home, reflecting on a recent matter whereby a Halfway House child was run over outside the school premises.
