Tough being a car guard

MIDRAND – Carlswald Lifestyle Centre care guards are paying a daily fee for every parking block they occupy but centre is pointing a finger at Fidelity security services.

Carlswald Lifestyle Centre car guards, who have asked to remain anonymous due to the fear of losing their jobs, have revealed that they pay a varying amount in accordance with the parking blocks they occupy on any particular day.

Each car guard controls a section of parking per day and is forced to rotate each day. In addition, there are two shifts, the morning shift and the night shift. It is said that money paid to operate in the parking area ranges from R27 to R38 per day, which is collected by one person after each shift.

The guards depend on the money they get from motorists in order to have enough to pay their daily fee as well as have some money left over to put bread on the table. These are family men with wives and children to feed and educate with the little they make, which, they reveal, is not much.

The motorists, who were randomly questioned about their level of knowledge of how this car guard system works, were unaware that the car guards depend on their donations in order to operate in the centre, as they assumed that all the money they made went straight into the car guards’ pockets.

Carlswald Centre manager, Christo de Lange said the centre did not charge car guards, nor does it employ them, as the centre has employed a security services company for all their security, including car guards. The security company was contacted on the matter, with each person passing the call on to the next, eventually giving no comment.

This seems to be the case at many malls and centres such as San Ridge Square and Boulders Mall.
