Youth co-operative uses waste to uplift community

MIDRAND – Unemployed youth can have prospects in other sectors such as waste collection.

A Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa) depot manager in Midrand, Stanley Mangoegape, said there are many work opportunities for the Midrand youth.

He cited the example of an initiative by three young Soshanguve residents who are playing their part in uplifting their community by creating job opportunities.

Through Redisa, a company which recycles waste tyres into useful products, micro-collectors Koketso Mogale, Simon Phungwayo and Smanga Nkosi, are participating in the Redisa Plan which involves Redisa depots working closely with micro-collectors.

Mangoegape said, “The young people are doing a great job in a time when unemployment is high. Working with Redisa has also changed my circumstances and given me a new lease on life. They gave me an opportunity when no-one else would.”

The youth’s company, Easy Touch Primary Co-operative, operates in the Winterveldt, Pretoria, Soshanguve and Mabopane areas. The company does not only clean up waste in the community but also creates opportunities for about 50 unemployed youth who have joined as part of the co-operative.

Speaking about his journey as a micro-collector, Mogale said, “My friends and I are happy to have been given an opportunity that allows us to earn an honest living and to put food on the table for our families. We have also been able to show other unemployed youth that there are prospects in other sectors such as waste, and we hope to grow our business to employ more people.”

Redisa director, Stacey Davidson said, “As Redisa, we have always believed that with waste comes opportunity, and with only 10 percent of waste being recycled, there is an opportunity to turn the burden of waste around. It is also encouraging to see young people seizing the opportunity from waste.”
