Ward 112 councillor’s focus

MIDRAND – Madeleine Hicklin shared her one-month journey as Ward 112 Councillor.

The newly elected Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor of Ward 112, Madeleine Hicklin has described her new role in the community as an exhilarating, humbling and challenging experience.

Hicklin said she is humbled by the faith the community has shown in her ability to run the ward by electing her.

Most of the issues raised by residents are service-delivery related, according to the councillor, including:

  • The abundance of litter across the entire area
  • The increasing traffic
  • And soaring crime statistics.

“I have already referred countless requests to Region A’s Environmental Health Department for clean-up teams to remove litter and rubbish across the ward – and they have responded exceptionally well,” she said.

In order to decrease the level of crime, Hicklin said she engaged with Community Policing Forums and sector police to increase patrols in the area and to engage with South African Police Services about response times and availability of resources.

A legacy programme is in the pipelines, according to the councillor, with the aim to foster community cohesion, create inviting environmental spaces that restore faith in the built environment, and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit that is inherent in all South Africans.
