Resident honoured for outstanding community work

MIDRAND – A total of 60 women were nominated for the Gauteng Provincial Legislature's second annual Vita Basadi Awards and a Midrand resident walks away as runner-up.

Life 4 U Foundation chairperson and co-founder, Mpho Mofokeng, and other women who also work within communities in various projects were recently honoured for their community work at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s second annual Vita Basadi Awards.

The awards, which were held at the City Hall in Johannesburg, celebrated bold women who contribute to the well-being of their communities.

Mofokeng, through her work at Life 4 U Foundation, an organisation which works with underprivileged children, orphans and widows, was the runner-up for the outstanding Young Philanthropist of the Year category.

She said, “I would like to thank the community of Ivory Park, Midrand and Tembisa for nominating me for the awards and I was also nominated in two other categories. The nominations are proof that the work we are doing at Life 4 U Foundation is appreciated by the community.”

Mofokeng also thanked her family, sponsors, volunteers and Simon Molekwa, her mentor.

Founder and project manager at Life 4 U Foundation, Simon Molekwa said, “I would like to congratulate Mofokeng for her passion to serve the community and making sure that the widows and the disadvantaged persons in the community are not neglected.”

Molekwa continued, “She serves the community through the poverty and disaster relief programme, and, thank you to the community for nominating her and supporting our organisation.”

In her speech at the awards, Gauteng Provincial Legislature Speaker, Ntombi Mekgwe said, “These awards are our way of saying [to the women nominated], although you may be the unsung heroines of our province, your deeds are not going unnoticed. We salute you, we say thank you for your humanity.

“We are talking here about women who do not necessarily have pockets full of money, but hearts full of love and dedication to help others. This is their driving force in the community work that they do. These are women who know that a single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.”
