Quick meet-and-greet with Joburg’s MMCs

JOBURG – Find out a little more about the 10 new heads of departments.

Meet the City of Gold’s 10 new Members of the Mayoral Committe (MMCs), who will be responsible for departments from development planning to health.

Eight of the MMCs are Democratic Alliance members while the other two are members of the Inkatha Freedom Party. Herman Mashaba, the City of Johannesburg‘s mayor, said the new MMCs are people with an abundance of skills and knowledge.

“The team I appointed just over two weeks ago is made up of doctors, a professor, a lawyer, community development activists and, plainly, people who have a deep love for their city, people with a passion for development, and a dedication to achieving it,” he said in his speech at the second council meeting on 13 September.

Dr Rabelani Dagada – MMC for Finance

Dr Rabelani Dagada is an acclaimed academic, author and development economist who was born in Alexandra. He holds master’s degrees from both the University of Johannesburg and Witwatersrand and a PhD in Information Systems from the University of South Africa. He has extensive experience in the fields of telecommunications, information technology and education, and serves on the board of a number of non-profit organisations.

Dr Valencia Khumalo – MMC for Corporate and Shared Services

Dr Valencia Ntombi Khumalo was a lecturer in somatology at the University of Johannesburg prior to her recent election to Council. She has been in the somatology industry for more than a decade, received a doctorate in health professions education, published research papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented at local and international conventions.

Nonhlanhla Makhuba – MMC for Transport

Nonhlanhla Helen Makhuba was first elected to Parliament as a representative of the Inkatha Freedom Party in 2009. She served on the Portfolio Committee for Communications and as an alternate member on the committees for health, water and environmental affairs. She is a long-time resident of Soweto and holds a Diploma in Financial Management and an advanced Certificate in Credit Management.

Richard Ngobeni – MMC for Development Planning

Richard Funzela Ngobeni has been active in politics since his youth as a member of the Congress of South African Students. He later joined the Democratic Alliance and was elected to the Joburg Council as a proportional representative in 2014. He holds diplomas in tourism management and public relations.The resident of Cosmo City is well-known as a civic leader and community activist in Gauteng – especially within Ward 100.

Mzobanzi Ntuli – MMC for Housing

Ntuli is a former Gauteng leader of the Inkatha Youth Brigade and served as Chief Whip of the Inkatha Freedom Party. He completed a national certificate in Municipal Governance in 2009 and attended a course on public houses at the University of the Witwatersrand. He has vast experience, having served as a councillor in the City of Joburg since 2000.

Sharon Peetz – MMC for Economic Development

Sharon Peetz has extensive experience in the fields of economic development, tourism and strategic project management. A graduate of the University of KwaZulu-Natal she served as general manager of Durban Tourism and Johannesburg Tourism prior to becoming a director at the African Bureau of Conventions, a company that organises international events and exhibitions in southern Africa.

Dr Mpho Phalatse – MMC for Health and Social Development

Dr Mpho Phalatse is a medical doctor with vast experience in the health sector. A graduate of the Medical University of South Africa, she served as a general practitioner and Registrar: Public Health Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand. She also holds an advanced Diploma in Project Management and a Diploma in the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. She is in the process of completing her MMed in Public Health Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Nonhlanhla Sifumba – MMC for Community Development

Nonhlanhla Sifumba studied project management at the Wits School of Governance. She also holds a Diploma in Banking and Business and has obtained a number of certificates over the past two decades, including HIV/Aids counselling and care, community participation in health, and financial management. She has served as the assistant director at the Soweto HIV/Aids Counsellor Association, a research executive at Quest Research Services and, most recently, as a PR councillor for Soweto West, Whip for Region D and DA Shadow MMC for Community Development since 2012.

Anthony Still – MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services

Anthony Still is a former managing director of Johannesburg Water (Pty) Ltd, after spending his first 16 months in the formation of Johannesburg Water as the transition manager. He also spent six years as an international consultant on utilities, especially water. He has also had experience in development finance and public/private partnerships. He has a BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Natal and an MPhil in Management from Oxford University.

Michael Sun – MMC for Public Safety

Yao-Heng Michael Sun is an admitted attorney with a distinguished career in law, public safety and justice issues. He has served as a councillor since 2006 and was the DA’s Shadow MMC for Public Safety since 2013.
