Beauty project aims to empower unemployed youth

MIDRAND – A program to allieviate unemployment in Olievenhoutbosch, Midrand.

The Unemployed Need Transformation (Unt), an acrredited training provider and the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), a non-governmental organisation, have come together to provide a beauty course to Olievenhoutbosch’s youth.

Twenty young women are taking part in a beauty course with the hope of one day opening their own businesses, or perhaps working for a hair salon.

Shaun Unterslak from Unt said the objective of the initiative is to reduce unemployment and uplift the youth. “The young people in this three-month programme will learn a skill that will help them pay for their upkeep in life, open their own hair salons, or work for an established one. The course only costs R1 200,” said Unterslak.

Sanco’s Samuel Mashala explained that the programme, which includes hair, nails and other beauty elements, will change the lives of the young ladies. “Our young people end up taking drugs and participating in criminal activities because they don’t have opportunities to take them away from such things. We are excited about this beauty course and what it will do for the lives of the ladies taking part in it,” said a concerned Mashala.

Mashala would like to appeal to the community to assist the 20 students currently taking the course, in the following ways:

Dikeledi Tlapa, one of the beauty course students, is undertaking the course in the hope of raising money to further her education. She said, “Due to financial problems, I was unable to go to university. I would like to start doing hair and raise money so that I can study medicine.”

Another student, Anolia Lusunzi, said, “I am thankful for this opportunity. I was doing hair here and there but was not as skilled. This will give me an opportunity to be good at what I do and one day open my own business.”
