Midrand cashier nabbed for theft

MIDRAND – According to video footage, a cashier at Carlswald Spar did not scan items purchased and was subsequently arrested.

A cashier at Carlswald Spar was arrested for theft after video footage showed that she had not scanned R1 000 worth of groceries.

It is alleged that the cashier did not scan some of an unknown male customer’s groceries which included two bulk beef trays, boerewors, dishwashing liquid, roll-on and other items. Midrand police officers were called and the suspect was arrested.

Spokesperson for Midrand Police Station, Constable Matome Tlamela said the cashier was also charged with fraud and bribery after she tried to bribe a police officer upon her arrest. Tlamela explained, “Upon investigation, we also found that the suspect was using someone else’s identity, claiming it is her sister. When police said they would take the suspect to her home to find the alleged sister, she [suspect] took out money and her asylum seeker temporary permit and handed it to the police officer, the money being a bribe.”

Carlswald Spar owner, Lucia Odendaal, confirmed that the incident had taken place. “Unfortunately, theft jeopardises every job and the success of any business. The matter is now under police investigation.”

The suspect will soon appear at Midrand Magistrates’ Court facing theft, bribery and fraud charges.
