Scholarships for unemployed youth

MIDRAND – Trust offers the youth scholarships in IT.

According to Change the World Trust in Midrand, a non-profit organisation involved in long-term ICT solutions, South Africa has a shortage of skills, not a shortage of jobs.

Marketing and media coordinator for the trust, Desiree Rikhotso, said South Africa is entering its fourth industrial revolution and, as the economy evolves digitally, South Africa is being left behind.

Since 2009, the organisation has trained more than 4 000 unemployed youth through its successful IT centres, boot camps and nationwide high school interventions. Rikhotso said, “The trust is offering IT scholarships to unemployed youth in Gauteng. We are targeting 400 unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 25.”

She stated that the scholarship programme has aided in the eradication of poverty, empowered entrepreneurs and assisted in reducing unemployment among the youth. “One of our students, Faith Muyengwa, signed up for our scholarship programme in 2012 and has become part of the trust’s core team as the IT programmes specialist. She has since trained more than 900 unemployed youth in ICT skills and is the trainer for our newly recruited facilitators,” said Rikhotso.
