Academic development for Midrand School

MIDRAND – A foundation in Midrand takes the maths and science challenge to a local school.

This Is Upward Falling Foundation, a non-profit organisation which focuses on creating holistic schooling environments, seeks to find solutions to curb the maths problems at Umqhele Secondary School in Ivory Park.

Partnering with Woolworths and Nedbank, the team from the foundation will run extra maths, science and English classes, as well as mentoring and sports clinics at the school.

Lotang Mokoena and Tshokologo Moloko, from the foundation, said the aim of the project is to find ways to improve maths and science results, especially in township schools. Moloko explained, “In partnership with Leslie Moloto, from XLEducation, which offers online courses, and Umqhele Secondary School in Ivory Park, we took up the challenge to assist the school’s pupils which, in 2014, had a maths pass rate for the matric class of 23.9 percent. We are helping pupils work towards a 100 percent pass rate.”

According to Moloko, the foundation’s team will also focus on encouraging pupils to play sports as, currently, the school has extreme restrictions in this regard as it does not have adequate sporting facilities. “Our vision for the school is ambitious, but we know it is possible.”
