Drive with care on tricky Alexandra Avenue curve

MIDRAND – Many drivers have failed to manoeuvre their way around the Alexandra Road bend just below the N1 bridge.

Midrand resident, Rex Mutero has raised his concerns with what he called a ‘high number of accidents’ at Midrand’s Alexandra Avenue curve near Boulders Mall.

Mutero suspects problems are often experienced at night because of a lack of visibility on the curve. The area is currently under construction and also has loose bricks lying in the road which have fallen from its brick wall barrier.

The tricky curve is on Alexandra Avenue where the M1/NI bridge crosses above it. The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said the agency inspected Alexandra Road following concerns raised by Mutero. The JRA will be installing warning signs for a curve/bend as well as chevrons and additional signage to alert traffic to slow down and trusts that these measures will reduce the number of accidents on the curve.

Unfortunately, Metro police’s Wayne Minnaar has refused to reveal the frequency of accidents on the curve and is not willing to comment further on the matter.

The cracked barrier and damaged retainer wall on the curve are evidence that vehicle crashes have taken place on the specific area, which has led to the newly-elected Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin promising to look into the matter and is calling on residents to contact her by emailing their community problems to her on ward112jhb@gmail.com.
