UPDATE: Cops recover firearms and ammo from hijackers

OLIFANTSFONTEIN - An alleged shootout has broken on the Olifantsfontein Road, R562 in Midrand.

UPDATE: 30 July 2016 – No police officers were injured in a shoot-out that took place at Olifantsfontein R562 on the afternoon of 29 July.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said Johannesburg Flying Squad police chased and arrested three suspects who were travelling in a hijacked BMW vehicle. He added, “The chase, in Olifantsfontein ended at Winnie Mandela informal settlement in Tembisa. No one was injured in the shoot-out, four firearms were recovered in the vehicle.”

Earlier in the afternoon a message seen by Midrand Reporter claimed that two police officers were shot and a helicopter and 20 police vehicles were seen near Phumulani Mall, which was recently torn apart by a tornado.

UPDATE: 3.42pm, 29 July – Steven Johnstone from the Community Policing Forum stated that a massive manhunt was underway around the Phumulani Mall, with a helicopter and over twenty police vehicles canvassing the area.

Phumulani Mall is only just pulling itself together after a tornado swept through the area on 26 July, damaging the mall and a number of shacks nearby.

Reports have surfaced of a shootout that has broken out near the McDonalds on the Olifantsfointein Road, R562.

Two South African Police members have allegedly been shot during the altercation.

A Midrand Reporter journalist is on route to the scene.
