Tree Tops Montessori Preschool children enjoy drumming workshop

MIDRAND – A drumming session for children helps stimulate their listening skills.

Children of Tree Tops Montessori Preschool in Midrand recently enjoyed learning how to tell a story through drumming at an interactive drumming workshop held at the preschool.

Principal Jenny de Kock said, “It was such fun for the children to tell a story using drumming techniques and movement while they learned about rhythm, tempo and beat.”

De Kock said that by listening and interpreting stories, the pupils improved their auditory perceptions and listening skills. “Many children who can be a little shy, really come out of their shells during these workshops and develop self-esteem,” the principal added.

“Music and percussion form an important part of our curriculum at our preschool and the children love the freedom to really express themselves during these lessons.”

She explained that it also teaches the children co-operation, patience, self-awareness and coordination of breath and movement. It is also a valuable channel for the release of intense, negative emotions and teaches the pupils to contain positive strong feelings and impulses and convert them into creative and positive activity.
