Metro police officer allegedly assaults motorist

MIDRAND – A Metro police officer is caught up in allegations of assault and threats towards a motorist.

 

According to a social media user, a Tshwane Metro police officer has been accused of assault and harassment.

The alleged incident was posted on the eBlockwatch Facebook group on 24 July.

According to the post, the officer, whose name has been withheld as Midrand Reporter has not managed to speak to the woman responsible for the post, allegedly ‘harassed, threatened and assaulted’ the motorist on the N1 highway at the Allandale off-ramp’.

She alleged that the officer gave her a R1 000 fine for an offence she did not reveal. The officer allegedly used profanities and threatened to throw her in jail.

The motorist claimed that she asked to see his officer’s badge but he allegedly, at first, refused to show it to her, but changed his mind and showed it to her.

The victim managed to take a photograph of the badge and recorded the incident, which she said traumatised her children who were in the vehicle at the time.

Spokesperson for Tshwane Metro police, Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba confirmed that the police officer is a Metro police officer.

Mhamba stated, “The officer is a member of the Tshwane Metro Police Department and we always teach our members to treat people in communities with the respect they deserve.

“However, it should be noted that in such cases there is always both sides of the story. We will get statements from both parties and we will investigate this further. We advise the complainant to approach us and lay a formal complaint or she may approach the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
