Southern Africa’s largest mosque’s and Islamic institution, The Nizamiye Turkish Masjid in Midrand, has denied any links to the recent failed coup of the Turkish government in July.
According to news reports, the mosque was funded by a benefactor linked to Fethullah Gulen, an Islamic scholar and cleric, who was blamed for the failed coup which killed more than 300 people and injured almost 2 100.
In a statement, Imam Ibrahim Atasoy said, “[The mosque]… distances itself from the failed coup… We condemn, in the strongest terms, the attempted military coup in Turkey. Government should be won through a process of free and fair elections, not by force. We pray to Allah for Turkey, for Turkish citizens, and for all those currently in Turkey that this situation is resolved peacefully and quickly.
“Unfortunately, we face baseless and irresponsible accusations about our institution in relation to the recent incidents in Turkey. We deny any allegation of involvement in this regard.”
