Acts of Love did more than 67 minutes in support of Mandela Day.
Every year Acts of Love, a public benefit organisation based in Midrand, participates in Mandela Day by selecting a school or community facility which is in dire need of renovation. The team spends the day improving infrastructure and resources for the facility.
The essence of Mandela Day is that citizens are encouraged to spend at least 67 minutes to address social injustices and serve others in time and deed.
This year, the organisation selected Ivory Park Primary School as the beneficiary of their project. Situated on the outskirts of Midrand, the school caters for 1 300 pupils from Grade 0 to 7. The school relies solely on sponsors and government funding to meet the costs involved with the day to day running and upkeep of the school. It faces considerable dilapidation, including classrooms and the play area.
On 16 July, the Acts of Love team, together with several volunteers of Acts Christian Church, spent the day renovating the school by preparing and fixing walls, painting certain areas and carrying out other general maintenance to improve the conditions for the pupils. The event was financially supported by Quince Capital, Jaymees Midas, BEC Contractors, Intuitive Technology, Tenova Minerals and the Business Centre.
Some classrooms were given a fresh coat of paint inside and out, 10 classrooms were painted and then brightened up by colourful murals, and wooden desks were sanded and varnished. In addition, 20 new wooden benches were purchased and painted on the day for the pupils’ play area, providing a bright and comfortable place where they can sit and eat their lunch. The organisation’s team provided breakfast and lunch for every volunteer that attended the event.
