New retail centre promises family fun

Willie Vos, chief executive officer of Waterfall Management and Operating Company, said the recently-opened Waterfall Wilds Centre, which is situated on the corner of Woodmead and Maxwell Drive, is aimed at outdoor family fun.

The centre has seven tenants with varying trades, however, Vos said this does not limit the amount of fun and activities that children can have while their parents shop in peace. “There is an arts and crafts shop that the children, people of all ages actually, can come take classes, buy books and canvas and decorate pottery to take home,” he said.

He said the Keith Kirsten Nursery is expected to be the main attraction to the centre, offering gardening enthusiasts a unique opportunity to learn the best tricks of the trade from a world-renowned horticulturist. “A variety of plants will be available and the nursery has tried to source as many indigenous plants as possible.”

He also said their centre was ideally situated at the Waterfall development. Vos added that they believed that the centre would still be a success, even with the Mall of Africa development in close proximity. “The developments of Mall of Africa and Waterfall Corner Shopping Centre mean that we have high visibility. We don’t expect that people will visit the centre for their everyday shopping, but we do think that anyone looking for a specialised service will make their way here.

“The location itself makes it easily accessible via public transport. The Gautrain bus literally stops right at the entrance of the centre. Residents of Waterfall can even use their golf carts to come here as they won’t really need to use public roads.”

When asked about the security measures that public transport users could expect, especially in light of the taxi violence that has marred the opening of Mall of Africa, Vos said, “As the Waterfall group, we deeply regret that there was violence at all. There are seven taxi associations operating in the area. There are only two that are involved in the negativity.

“We don’t underestimate the services that taxis provide. We welcome them, as they provide a vital service to the community.” Vos added that representatives from the group, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety and the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport were in talks with the taxi associations to reach an amicable solution.

“All our tenants are running specials until the end of the month. We encourage everyone to come visit us,” said Vos.
