Baby falls out of trolley outside Spar

MIDRAND – A mother is stressed after her child fell out of a trolley when it hit a pothole in the parking lot at Spar.

A baby fell out of a shopping trolley at Vorna Valley Spar after the trolley overturned when it hit a pothole.

The mother, Victoria Jamieson is upset as the centre did not follow up on the incident to check whether the family was okay.

She told Midrand Reporter that on 27 June at around 5pm, she, her mother and her six-month-old daughter went shopping at Spar. “After shopping, my mother was pushing the trolley back to the car with my baby daughter in it. The front wheel went into a very large pothole and overturned in front of many witnesses. My daughter fell out the trolley onto the road behind the parked cars. Thank goodness there was no car coming past at the time.”

She said she picked up her child who was screaming and crying and some people helped to right the trolley. “I went straight into Spar to report the incident and the manager on duty first inquired how my daughter was and then informed me that he was very sorry, but he has no control over the parking lot.

“However, he did take me across to see the centre manager, but she was not available. He asked us to return on Tuesday and said he would personally take us to the centre manager again.”

Jamieson said she was not able to sleep that night due to the shock and distress of her baby and, therefore, did not go to work. The following day, she went to Spar and spoke to the manager on duty again and he asked if her mother and daughter were alright after the incident.

Jamieson was taken to a centre management staff member but said that the woman did not even ask how the baby was doing, and only asked them to send centre management an e-mail.

The centre manager, Howard Polliack apologised for the way the matter had been handled by one of their staff and said that, as a result of the building work at the centre, they may have missed the pothole in question. However, it has been cordoned off and repaired. “Since the incident, we have instituted a mandatory procedure in that the building contractor walks the site every morning and late afternoon to check for potholes and other obstructions. We try to have them remedied that day or soon thereafter.”

He emphasised that the most important thing is that the child was unharmed and they are thankful for that. “People who shop at the centre are our most important asset.”
