Illegal firearms land two people in jail

MIDRAND – The illegal possession of ammunition and a firearm has led to the arrest of a young man and a woman.

In two separate cases, a man and a woman have been arrested for possession of ammunition and an illegal firearm by the Midrand police.

In the case of a 24-year-old man, the police received and anonymous tip-off at about 10.40pm on 1 July. The police found the young man in a house on Pitzer Road in Glen Austin. The police then searched the house and found a school bag that contained a box of 20 live rounds of ammunition.

The man said the ammunition belonged to his employer who was a hunting enthusiast. The police arrested the young man on the spot.

On 3 July, a 48-year-old woman was arrested for possessing an illegal firearm.

The woman was involved in a motor vehicle accident on Old Pretoria at midnight. When the police arrived at the scene of the accident, the woman got out of her vehicle with a gun in her hand. The police asked for a licence for the firearm and she refused to produce one. She also refused to hand the gun over to the police.

The police restrained her and she was arrested for possession of an illegal firearm.

Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communication at the station, could not comment on the woman’s state of mind at the time of her arrest. “She was the only person involved in the accident. She hit a stationary object,” said Tlamela. She also said the police would be investigating the case further.

“Both these suspects will be appearing at the Midrand Magistrates’ Court soon,” said Tlamela.
