DA Johannesburg mayoral candidate, Herman Mashaba, and chairperson of the DA’s Federal Executive, James Selfe, will today lay an official complaint with the IEC against the ANC’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate and incumbent mayor, Mpho Parks Tau.
Mashaba recently held a press conference where he mentioned that the City’s excessive advertising, which amounts to millions of rands worth of taxpayers’ money, is being used for blatant ANC electioneering.

“This abuse of taxpayers’ money by the City, under the leadership of Parks Tau, threatens the fairness of the elections and is in contravention of the Municipal Electoral Act,” said Mashaba.
He is expected to detail the interventions his party is requesting from the IEC, as well as possible alternative avenues should the IEC not heed their calls to intervene. Selfe will also detail how his Private Member’s Bill on Free and Fair Elections will prevent such abuse of taxpayers’ money in future.
Mashaba and Selfe will be joined by DA Johannesburg Regional chairperson, Khume Ramulifho who is a Member of the Provincial Legislature, and DA caucus leader in the City of Johannesburg, Vasco da Gama.

The City has, however, previously defended their advertising expenditure. City spokesperson, Nathatisi Modingoane stated that their advertising is within their Marketing and Communication Department’s budget.
