Councillor keeps Midrand warm

MIDRAND – Madeleine Hicklin, ward 112, DA councillor candidate is spreading some winter warmth to the most vulnerable in Midrand.

With the South African Weather Bureau predicting another fall in temperatures during this week, the Democratic Alliance (DA) spread winter cheer in various parts of the Midrand Constituency thanks to a donation of blankets by Rotary International.

The DA team included their candidate councillor for Ward 112, Madeleine Hicklin; and the ward’s interim branch chairperson and public relations candidate councillor, Lerato Mphefo, among others.

Hicklin said, “Blankets were distributed in Olievenhoutbosch (off the R55), Kanana, Rabie Ridge Ext 1, Sophiatown in Rabie Ridge and in Ivory Park. In total, 30 blankets were distributed by our activists and they went to needy and impoverished people battling against the harsh winter conditions and extreme poverty that are hallmarks of these communities.”

She said a number of the recipients were old-age pensioners and orphans, as well as people with severe disabilities who have been abandoned into the care of the community. “Thankfully, there have been people willing to take these residents in and look after them.”

Hicklin said she could feel the bitter cold herself and thus initiated the drive. “As the winter chill bites harder and harder, I began looking around for a donor to assist me with a supply of blankets to distribute. My prayers were answered by Midrand’s Rotary International’s Stephen Margo, who generously supplied me with some of the blankets he had collected through their annual blanket drive.

“The recipients of the blankets were thrilled with their gifts.”
