14 years in prison for thief

MIDRAND – Midrand Police Station records another successful case in which the suspect is given a 14-year direct imprisonment sentence.

Sherpard Khumalo (33) has been sentenced to 14 years’ direct imprisonment after robbing a Midrand company of its computer equipment.

The value of the equipment was estimated at R1-million.

On the morning of 28 September, Midrand police attended to the scene of a business robbery that occurred at a company on 16th Road in Randjies Park. “Upon their arrival, they found the security guard on duty and interviewed him. Khumalo alleged that the robbery took place while he was not on duty,” said Constable Matome Tlamela head of communication at the police station.

She said Khumalo had claimed that he had arrived for his shift only to find that the computer equipment was missing.

“On further investigation, the police viewed the company’s video footage and noticed the same security officer was on duty that night and had been busy tampering with the view of the cameras.

“The accused was also seen picking out some of the stuff that was taken by the other suspects when they were leaving the premises.” Khumalo was immediately arrested.

“The station commander, Colonel Steven Moodley and the station management would like to commend the good work of Detective Constable Khauli Joseph,” said Tlamela. “With his excellent expertise of investigative work, this case of business robbery where the accused was the employee of the company, proved fruitful.”
