Educational wings are the best

OLIEVENHOUTBOSCH – Township school-going children participated in a youth development programme facilitated by Giving Wings.

Giving Wings, in partnership with the Olieven Development Association, recently hosted a five-week youth development programme for Grade 10 and 11 pupils in Olievenhoutbosch.

The purpose of the programme is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and tools to be effective communicators. As a communication skills training company, Giving Wings is perfectly placed to host the programme.

According to Kefilwe Morobane, managing director of Giving Wings, “The ability to communicate effectively is a critical skill. In the township, there is a low proficiency in the English language and students find it very challenging to confidently communicate and, subsequently, limit their ability to excel after high school.”

The programme focuses on the development of public speaking, presentation and leadership skills in order to prepare the pupils to succeed in the workplace.

On 11 June, the programme concluded with the pupils participating in a speech contest. They presented speeches on the topic of what freedom means to them. In attendance were parents, teachers, friends, community members and sponsors.

The keynote speaker was Frank Magwegwe, middle market segment executive at Momentum Retail who shared his inspirational story about how he went from being a homeless street vendor to earning a top position in corporate South Africa. Magwegwe encouraged the students to work hard and never let their challenging backgrounds define their future.

The winners of the 2016 Giving Wings Speech Contest are:

  • First place: Nkosinathi Ndala, Grade 11 pupil of Steve Tshwete Secondary School
  • Second place: Usisipho Goso, Grade 11 pupil of Steve Tshwete Secondary School
  • Third place: Abigail Mohowa, Grade 11 pupil of Olievenhoutbosch Secondary School.

The hosts and organisers of the event thanked Tiro Communications, DWM Communications, X-Plaw Travel, Momentum, Lekhu Pilson Attorneys, U-Vita, Inertia Business Coaching, EP Consulting, Gauteng 911 and Khano Yashu Management Services for their contribution as sponsors of the programme.
