Commendation for detective

PRESIDENT PARK – A lengthy sentence has been handed down to two men for robbery.

Two men have been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for robbery with a weapon.

Midrand Police Station’s Detective Constable Joseph Khauli was the investigating officer in the case which led to the conviction of the two men.

On 19 May, a man who was walking along Kruger Road in President Park at about 6.30pm said he noticed two men running towards him and before he could get out of their way, the men were upon him and pulled out knives. In a statement to the police, the victim said the men demanded his valuables which were a Huawei cellphone worth R500 and R100 in cash.

The men then proceeded to stab him in his right hand and left buttock. It is unclear what aggravated the two robbers.

Fortunately for the victim, the Alexandra Tactical Response Team police unit was nearby patrolling the area and they noticed the two running along Kruger Road. “The members of the response team approached them and searched them. They found them in possession of the stolen cellphone,” said Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communications at Midrand Police Station.

She added that the team spoke to the victim. “The victim identified the two men on the spot as the ones who robbed him, and said that the cellphone was his. Both were arrested and sentenced to 12 years’ direct imprisonment each,” said Tlamela.

“The station’s commander Colonel Steven Moodley and the management would like to commend the arresting officers and detective Constable Khauli for the good work they have done with regard to sending the criminals to prison.”
