Education and entertainment at Con Hill

JOBURG – Learning about the Constitution is as easy as riding through the city and touring Con Hill.

Youth Month is drawing to a close, but there’s no stopping the numerous activities taking place to commemorate 40 years of Youth Day.

Constitution Hill celebrated the youth with a fun-filled day of beatboxing with the first #IAMCONSTITUTION Beat Box education experience launched in celebration of Youth Month by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation.

The #IAMCONSTITUTION campaign, which has already toured the nation to help the country better understand the Constitution, took this opportunity to introduce pupils of Chief Albert Luthuli primary and high schools to the Constitution through contemporary creative arts.

The event combined education and entertainment by kicking off the experience with a short tour of the city on the City Sightseeing Red Bus in Johannesburg, following which the pupils were able to learn about beatboxing and the art on display at the heritage site.

As part of the celebration, the school’s primary school pupils showcased a short extract of their energetic theatre piece about the Constitution and South African history.

“The Constitution is a roadmap for our nation, and in a multicultural country like ours, it is our most precious asset. We have a duty to protect it for the future of our youth,” said Ivor Ichikowitz, chairman of the foundation.

“Our foundation asks South Africans to review the dreams and hopes of all those who have gone before, to look at our Constitution and determine how far we have come and what we can do to support its values for future generations.

“We do this by working with those making a difference, those playing their part to promote active citizenship and to continually innovate new ways to engage with our heritage and Constitution.”

The exchange of Jean Kitenge’s beatbox urban style with song and dance by the pupils highlighted the impressive ability of future generations to engage in dialogue, no matter what their age.
