Drum majorettes fly the flag for Halfway House Primary

HALFWAY HOUSE – Drum majorettes of Halfway House Primary School impress other teams.

The Halfway House Primary School drum majorettes team is growing from strength to strength.

This is according to their coach and co-ordinator, Francisca Bester. “Several competitions have been held since 5 March this year,” said Bester.

“The girls handled pom poms at the Johannes Potgieter Provincial Championships which were held at Hoërskool Eldoraigne in Centurion on 21 May; and flag imaging was for the Allan Donaldson Provincial Championships held at Saint Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls in Boksburg on 4 June,” she said.

Although Bester did not divulge how well the team did in the competitions, she said they were proud of the growth of the sport within their school. “The team first recruited girls in the fourth term of 2014 and started competing in 2015. This year marks the second year of the team’s existence,” she said.

“The team has showcased spectacular talent and determination in all their competitions. In only their second year of existence, they have managed to place themselves in the top three teams in the President’s League against teams that have been competing for many years. At every competition, they amaze trainers, parents and supporters of other teams who only have the highest regard for the team’s efforts.”

Bester said the teachers, pupils and parents of the school have supported the team in all their efforts.

“As for the drum majorettes themselves, they are hard working and dedicated girls, on and off the field. Drum majorettes is a team sport like no other, where you cannot rely on reserves or a B team to fill up a space if someone is absent. The absence of one member influences the whole performance of the team,” she said.

Bester said the sport had not distracted her trainees from their academics. “Some of our girls are part of the top 10 in their grades. Some of our girls recently took part in the school’s speech evenings where two Grade 7 girls won their respective categories. Last year, most of our senior girls were chosen as leaders or monitors at the school,” she said.

“Discipline on and off the field is greatly motivated. That is what makes the team so successful.”
