Court hears Pistorius is not fit to be sent back to jail

JOBURG – A recap of day one of resentencing proceedings of Oscar Pistorius.

The first defence witness in the sentencing proceeding of Oscar Pistorius told the North Gauteng High Court that the former Paralympian is not fit to be sent back to jail.

Professor Jonathan Scholtz told the court that it would be better for Pistorius to give back in constructive ways, such as using his skills to enhance the lives of others.

Scholtz said the former Paralympian was riddled with remorse for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The clinical psychologist also mentioned that the convicted murderer had signs of general anxiety disorder, severe depression and, among other things, is unable to socialise.

“He becomes upset when he hears gunfire, even on TV.” The professor also told the court that Pistorius will not be able to testify in his sentencing arguments.

State Prosecutor, Gerrie Nel went all out to discredit Scholtz’s testimony. Nel said that the doctor was biased and compiled a report that would favour Pistorius. The State argued that if Pistorius is too distraught to testify, why was he able to give a TV interview to a Britain-based broadcaster.

Nel also questioned why Pistorius’ violent nature was not addressed in the doctor’s report. The State mentioned that Pistorius was verbally abusive and violent while in prison, serving his culpable homicide conviction that was overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Day two of the sentencing proceedings are underway.
