Pupils learn about the dangers of smoking

MIDRAND – Region A takes smoking and teenage pregnancy education to pupils.

Region A’s Department of Environmental Health commemorated World No Tobacco Day on the 27 May at Ivory Park Secondary School in Midrand.

The department’s Sharlene Moshidi said World No Tobacco day was commemorated internationally on the 31 May. “World No Tobacco Day is a global public health campaign identified by the World Health Organisation which aims to offer great potential to raise awareness and understanding about health issues and mobilise support for action from local to international communities,” she said.

The department’s operational manager, John Nyambi, gave a talk at the school’s assembly on the unhealthy effects of tobacco. Thereafter, Grade 8 and 9 pupils were also given information about teenage pregnancy.

Pupils participated by answering questions and were rewarded with rulers, pencil cases and water bottles when they gave a correct answer.

Principal Edith Mamosebo acknowledged and thanked the Region A Health Department’s deputy director Nelly Shongwe and the environmental health practitioners and health promoters for sharing the information with pupils.

Those pupils who showed an interest in quitting smoking were referred to the National Council Against Smoking Quit Line.
