The bridge rehabilitation upgrade is the largest construction project ever managed by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the infrastructure being built now will benefit the City of Johannesburg, its residents, the business sector and visitors for decades to come.
As the project to rehabilitate the M1 continues, here are a few things you need to know:
- The M1 section under construction is a key arterial route through the heart of Joburg carrying some 80 000 private cars, commercial traffic, buses and taxis every day.
- The construction includes significant upgrades to the iconic double-decker section of the M1 between Anderson and Carr streets.
- A 2km section of dual carriageway between Rockridge and Federation roads is being rehabilitated and the existing storm water drains are being replaced.
- Rehabilitation includes structural repairs, asphalt surfacing, repair of expansion joints and drainage systems and new road signs.
- The bridges at Federation Road in Killarney and Oxford Street will receive major facelifts.
- Temporary closures when traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction will be in place during the night time and weekend construction.
- The JRA has placed a tow truck on standby to remove stationary vehicles from the construction zones and enable traffic to flow.
- Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit, Metrobus, Gautrain and taxis offer public transport alternatives for commuters.
- Various traffic apps can be downloaded to help plan your journey and the latest traffic condition advisories are also provided to radio stations by the JRA.
