Mother burns daughter with spoon

MIDRAND – Little girl burnt with a hot spoon for wetting the couch.

A mother (24) from Ivory Park Ext 2 who allegedly abused her daughter was arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said the mother was arrested on 23 May after members of the police station’s victim empowerment unit received a call from a community member who told them about the alleged abuse of the child.

“One of the sector managers was informed and proceeded to that address and brought the woman and the child to the station,” said Sekgobela.

“The child had injuries on her legs and on her back. The mother was asked what happened to the child and she told police that the child relieved herself on the couch and she burnt the child several times with a hot spoon.”

Sekgobela said the child has been taken to a place of safety. “The child’s relatives were asked if they would want to take the child but they said they cannot care for the child. The girl has been treated for her injuries,” she said.

The suspect was detained at Ivory Park police holding cells and will appear in Tembisa Magistrates’ Court.
