Action against hunger

MIDRAND – Food For Life Midrand is looking for volunteers for World Hunger Day.

Food for Life (FFL) Midrand, a non-governmental organisation, and organisations around the world, have planned several initiatives to mark World Hunger Day on 28 May in an effort to declare their commitment to eradicating hunger globally.

World Hunger Day was launched by Hunger Project UK in 2011.

Chairperson of FFL Midrand, Vinesh Maharaj said every month, Food for Life Midrand provides fresh nutritious meals in line with FFL Global’s standards, the largest food relief organisation in the world, eclipsing even the United Nations World Food Programme, and serving two million vegetarian and vegan meals daily. These meals are cooked and served by Food For Life Midrand to the recipients of its programme in Ivory Park and President Park – the Tumelo Home for the Mentally Handicapped, the Thuthukani Centre and the New Jerusalem Children’s Home – as well as a once-a-month programme at Ivory Park Secondary School.

Maharaj said the theme for this year is good nutrition. He emphasised, “This has always been a critical characteristic of the Food for Life brand globally, including in Midrand. Individuals and organisations in South Africa must continue to help make South Africa a hunger-free country.”

Maharaj urged residents of Midrand, and surrounding suburbs, to volunteer their time at this month’s programme on 29 May to commemorate World Hunger Day.

He stated, “Due to the amazing support received from sponsors and volunteers, FFL Midrand is now in a position to feed more children, as well as provide even more attention to the children, in two teams. This is enabling the children to have their lunch much earlier. We, therefore, need as many volunteers as possible to assist with the feeding so that the two teams are fully manned.”

Maharaj added that the Hunger Project website states that good nutrition is a cornerstone of good health. People with adequate nutrition are more productive and can create opportunities to break the cycles of poverty and hunger.

“This is why World Hunger Day aims to inspire people in both the developed and developing worlds to show their solidarity and support to enable many more people and organisations to find sustainable solutions to eradicating hunger and poverty.”

Details: Volunteers can meet the FFL Midrand team on 29 May on the corner of Le Roux Road and Smuts Drive at 11.15am.
