Summerhill Prep gives back

MIDRAND – A local school and an organisation enjoy the art of giving.

Summerhill Preparatory School is proud to be part of a tradition which gives back to children in need, especially through the Johannesburg Mini Council, which empowers young people in member schools through leadership development programmes.

A teacher of the school, Stephanie Black said, “We collected a lot of Easter eggs in April and ranked 16 out of 100 schools for the quantities collected. With this being our first year taking part in the initiative, we have certainly started off in a big way. Thank you to parents, pupils and staff for all their donations.”

Speaking on behalf of the Johannesburg Mini Council, Avril Rebeck said the council has been involved in charity work since 1972. She explained, “Over the years, we have donated Easter eggs, blankets and sweets to 120 charities in South Africa and outside the country. This year, we received 400 000 Easter eggs which are distributed to various charities.”

She mentioned that in June, the council will do a blanket drive for senior citizens in various homes and, in November, donated sweets will be sent to charities for Christmas parties.

Rebeck added, “We do what we do so that children can help other children and understand challenges they face, and cultivate a culture of giving.”
