13 people lose their cars at Mall of Africa

MIDRAND – Forgetfulness has resulted in people reporting their cars stolen, according to Metro police.

Social media has been abuzz with cases of people reporting their cars stolen at the Mall of Africa’s grand opening on 28 April.

Edna Mamonyane, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, confirmed that they had received 17 stolen car reports at the mall on the day. However, upon investigation, they found that only four were genuinely missing. One of the cars was recovered in Soweto on the same day.

“The rest of the 13 vehicles were not missing, it is simply that people forgot where they had parked,” she said.

“People walk around for hours searching for their car and when they don’t find it they call the police.”

Mamonyane said she advised people to take note of where they were parking. “You must know which level you are parked in and in which section of the parking lot,” she said.

“Mall of Africa has letters, numbers and colour coding to help patrons remember where they’ve parked.”
