School gets involved in soup kitchen

MIDRAND – A school offers a helping hand for children in the Midrand community.

Glen Austin High School’s Land Service team recently participated in the Acts of Love Soup Kitchen and fed a group of community members from Olievenhoutbosch.

Pupils prepared meals on 23 April and spent the morning distributing sandwiches and spending time with the children and mothers of the community. Pupils raised the funds which they needed for the initiative throughout the week and came together as a school with their teachers in order to prepare the meals and juices. The Acts of Love Soup Kitchen takes place on a biweekly basis.

The school’s vice principal, Dirk Van Niekerk said, “Glen Austin High School has the heart to give to those in need and they will be doing many more outreaches such as this throughout the year.”

Chairperson of the school’s Learner Representative Council, Mark Ndlovu, said he was pleased with the way in which the pupils got involved. Ndlovu added, “Spending time with the children from the community really changed the mindset of many of the pupils as to how privileged and fortunate they are.”

Head of Acts of Love, Cindy Naidoo, thanked Glen Austin High School and said that they are a great example of being a blessing to those less fortunate.

The school will spend time helping out at the Midrand SPCA for their next outreach initiative.
