The long-awaited Mall of Africa, developed by Atterbury Property Developments, officially opened today and excited shoppers braved heavy traffic to buy and window shop at the new mall. (Scroll down to view a special report on the opening of the mall by JoburgToday.Tv)

Gauteng Premier and Midrand resident, David Makhura, officially launched the Mall of Africa and interacted with shoppers as he toured the facility. He said, “We will look at housing development around the Midrand area. We have expanded the R511 road in anticipation of the activity leading to the mall. We welcome initiatives, such as this mall, which help grow the economy.”

Many excited shoppers arrived as early as 5am so that when it opened, they were first in line at their favourite stores which had exciting opening specials. A woman from Centurion, Maki Major, was Checkers Hyper’s first customer. She told Midrand Reporter, “I had to get here very early in the morning to buy baby products for my grandchild who will be born soon.”

Kyalami residents Tumi Mokoena and Mncedisi Malesa were excited to be at the mall. “We are here for all our favourite shops… we have waited for so long for this mall,” said Mokoena.

Midrand Reporter attended the official opening of Checkers Hyper which boasts a sit-down café where customers can enjoy imported ground coffee or a freshly-made smoothie.

The store’s branch manager, Vincent Kotzee said he and his team looked forward to bringing consumers a convenient shopping experience. The retail giant also donated R5 000 to Midrand SPCA. The SPCA’s manager Elsje Naicker said, “We are grateful to Checkers Hyper for the R5 000 donation. The money will help in [looking after] animals in our care.”
