Police head up awareness campaign

MIDRAND – Midrand Police continue their anti-crime awareness campaigns in local schools.

Midrand police, together with Metro police and the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence spoke to Glen Austin High School pupils about the dangers of substance abuse on 20 April.

The police station’s head of communications, Constable Matome Tlamela said the campaign was also an anti-bullying drive which was aimed at raising awareness on personal safety and the consequences related to breaking the law.

On 21 April, the police took their message to even younger minds. Metro police and officers from the Midrand Police Station visited Sunflower Preschool at the corner of Albertyn Road and Le Roux Street. The hour-long event addressed bullying, human rights, road safety, firefighting, stranger danger, as well as emergency numbers and the Childline number.

Unlike their older counterparts, the preschoolers’ lesson was accompanied with songs and dancing. “The Children were also advised to know their parents’ names, residential addresses, and the cellphone numbers of their parents, as well as the nearest police station’s numbers,” said Tlamela.

“The children were interacting and happy to meet the police. Both schools said they would be grateful if we visited again.”
