Thwarted housebreaking in Vorna Valley

VORNA VALLEY– Five armed suspects escape during a high-speed chase with security company on 18 April.

At about 11.20am on 18 April, a high-speed chase in Vorna Valley followed a thwarted housebreaking incident.

“On my routine patrol in the suburb, I saw five male suspects. Three of them had firearms,” said Danny Maduray, of Ria Sebetsa Security, a local security company.

“They broke a driveway gate on Coetzee street. When I approached them they fired shots at me and I returned fire. They drove away speedily and whilst I turned my vehicle, they had a big lead in front of me. They skipped a red robot on Le Roux Avenue and on Old Pretoria Road and headed towards the N1 south.”

Maduray said there was a Metro police roadblock nearby, which the suspects did not stop at.

“I had to stop at the roadblock to inform the officers of what had happened. The police officers immediately gave chase, but it was too late because we did not know which route they took,” Maduray said.

Although nothing was stolen, the domestic worker was alone at home and according to Maduray, she was traumatised.

“Nothing was stolen and the only damage caused was to the driveway gate [as the suspects tried to force it open].”

Constable Matome Tlamela of the Midrand Police Station spoke on behalf of law enforcement officers as the owners of the home opened a case of malicious damage to property with them.

“The complainant reported a case of malicious damage to property after the suspects broke the lock of his main gate at his residential place,” said Tlamela.

“Suspects didn’t gain entry into the premises. The police are busy investigating the case and we are hoping to bring the suspects to book.”

Maduray said residents must educate their domestic workers on how to use the panic button. “Residents must also give emergency contact numbers for them to call and when they are outside of the property, they must make sure to be vigilant and take note of suspicious cars or persons.

“Ria Sebetsa Security will have a domestic workers forum shortly for all domestic workers and garden service workers, this information session will be communicated soon and we advise all residents to send there domestic workers to attend.”
