Suspect arrested for stealing R120 000 stokvel money

IVORY PARK - Man steals R120 000 from his cousin and goes on a shopping spree.

A suspect was arrested in the early hours of 20 April for allegedly stealing R120 000 of stokvel money from his cousin.

The cousin had hidden the money behind a cupboard and covered it up with a blanket. Stokvel is a savings or investment which a group of people regularly contribute an agreed amount to and from which they receive a bulk sum of money.

Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said that according to the complainant, who lives with the suspect, he disappeared the same day the money was taken.

Sekgobela explained, “The 28-year-old suspect was later found and arrested in Soshanguve, Pretoria, after community members alerted police to his whereabouts. The suspect allegedly used some of the money to buy himself a car which is already registered under his name.”

The suspect will soon appear in Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on charges of theft.
