Man gunned down in front of wife

PRESIDENT PARK – A husband and father of two is shot dead on Ridge Road during an alleged attempted hijacking.

A man was shot dead in what seems to be a botched hijacking on Ridge Road in President Park on 20 April.

The man was travelling with his wife at around 1.55pm when two BMWs allegedly approached their vehicle and an occupant of one of the cars shot at the man. Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communications at the Midrand Police Station said, “Nothing was taken. The men just drove off after shooting. The witness just saw two cars driving off… (And does) not know which one had the shooter inside,” said Tlamela.

When questioned if the shooters had actually attempted to take the vehicle the man and his wife were driving in, Tlamela said the investigation was still ongoing. “The car veered off the road and hit a wall,” she said.

“The wife, who was in the passenger seat at the time, was too shocked and we haven’t got much details from her.

“No arrests have yet been made, a case of murder has been opened and the investigation is still ongoing.” Tlamela added that they could not ascertain the number of people in the BMWs.

Netcare911’s media liaison officer, Athlenda Mathe, said paramedics arrived on the scene and found that the man who is believed to be in his late 50s had already died due to the gunshot wound he sustained and was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“The wife and the man’s two children [who were not present at the scene] are all receiving post trauma counselling from us,” said Mathe.
