The story behind Ria Sebetsa Security Services

MIDRAND - A security company was born after the CEO was a victim of crime, twice.

Ria Sebetsa Security Services, like most security companies in Midrand, has become well known in the community.

Social media posts about the security company on the People of Midrand Facebook page tell a story of a company that is leaving its mark in the fight against crime in the area.

The company was by started in 2008 after its chief executive officer Danny Maduray and his family were victims of crime, twice. He shared how in 2005 he got hijacked in Midrand.

“I fought with the suspects and the hijackers tried to shoot me but the gun jammed. Years later I was again a victim of a house robbery. I fought with the criminals who had gained entry by opening my Trelidoor and sliding door,” he said.

He shared how when he woke up he realised that the sliding door was open and his outside lights were off. While his wife ran to call the security company, Maduray found himself fighting with the two housebreaking suspects. One of his young children ran to him and he then made the decision to save his daughter and quickly ran into the house with her and shut the doors.

He contacted his neighbours who helped him chase the criminals, who eventually got away.

Maduray emphasised that no one should fight off criminals, rather let them take what they want and escape with your life. “In over 20 years of security experience, I have learnt that life is valuable. It is dangerous to fight off criminals; I was caught in the moment and thought the house robbers had no gun. If I had known they had a firearm I would not have fought back.”

The decision to start a security company that reacts promptly was an easy one, after his security company took 40 minutes to respond after he was a victim in both crimes. “Due to the two incidents, I knew that if I paid for a security company I would want them to arrive very quickly, hence all Ria Sebetsa vehicles are parked at strategic points. If any of my clients are about to be victims of crime, my vehicles will respond in less than five minutes.”

He said police and security companies should be highly visible so that criminals will be discouraged from trying to commit a crime in a particular area. He revealed that a lot of people in the community call him and demand to know why Ria Sebetsa vehicles are not parked on their street. “Unfortunately, as a company we have to guard areas we are contracted to, but we are dedicated to fighting crime in Midrand.”

Maduray thanked Midrand Police Station Commander Colonel Moodley and the police officers for allowing security companies to work with police on patrols, as crime needs a united front from police and security companies.
