Entries open for schools annual national accounting olympiad

JOHANNESBURG – An education initiative that helps to prepare pupils for tertiary education and identify accounting talent in schools.

Grade 11 and 12 pupils are invited to enter the 2016 South African Institute of Chartered Accountants Sage One Accounting Olympiad to stand a chance of winning a share of the R300 000 in prize value.

The olympiad is a three-hour test that gives pupils an opportunity to wrestle with credits, debits and adjustments. It was created to help prepare pupils for tertiary education, help identify accounting talent in schools, and show pupils the link between the subject and possible career opportunities in the field. Last year 4 100 Grade 11 and 12 pupils from 322 schools competed in the olympiad.

Head of Sage One International, Steven Cohen, said the olympiad played an important part in the objective to grow the number of chartered accountants in South Africa. Cohen said, “… we see it as a privilege to help develop the next generation of financial and entrepreneurial skills. That is why we are such proud supporters of the annual accounting olympiad.”

Project director for transformation, growth and professional development at the institute, Gugu Makhanya said, “Year after year we see that olympiad participants have an advantage over their peers going into their final matric exams.”

Prizes include a laptop for the top pupil and the winning school in each province will be given two desktops preloaded with NCS Sage Pastel software written specifically for the Grade 11 and 12 national accounting curriculums. The top school’s accounting teacher will win R2 000.

The participating schools are selected by the institute in conjunction with the provincial departments of education. Teachers from these schools choose the top 10 to15 pupils who will participate. Only 500 pupils per province take part.

The closing date for high schools to submit their entries is 30 April 2016. The olympiad will take place on 3 August this year.
