Family finds more than juice in a Pick n Pay product

MIDRAND - What is in your juice? Midrand family gets more than they paid for when purchasing juice.

A family from Midrand is upset after allegedly finding something extra in a juice carton purchased at Pick n Pay at Halfway House, but Pick n Pay insists it is only mould.

The family, whose name has been withheld, has attempted to get Pick n Pay to pay for a medical check-up for the family to ensure that the ‘mould’ did not affect their health.

The mother said, “As we were drinking the juice, my seven-year-old son complained that the juice is not coming out, something was blocking the juice. I cut the box to see what is inside and we got the shock of our life. The most disgusting thing ever, you can’t tell if it is a condom or plastic is inside.”

The family claims Pick n Pay first offered them a fruit basket to apologise for the incident and later R100 on a Pick n Pay smart shopper card but the family said that is not enough.

“The most important thing is our health and they must organise doctors to test us too,” said the mother.

After the incident, Pick n Pay sent a sample to a laboratory and more than three weeks later, received the results. Pick n Pay said it was, allegedly, black bread mould which commonly grows on bread and soft fruits and vegetables.

Director of merchandise and supply chain at Pick n Pay, Paulo Peereboom said, “Our customer bought a long-life fruit punch juice and returned it due to it having mould inside the container. We believe this is because the packaging was punctured at some stage. We have apologised to our customer for any upset caused. We have tested the product thoroughly and have assured the customer that the mould was not harmful to her health.”
