New Jerusalem Children’s Home breaks ground for boy’s residential unit

MIDRAND - The New Jerusalem Children’s Home celebrated the commencement of construction of a much-needed boys' residential unit at the home.

The home, a non-profit organisation currently accommodating 88 children from birth to 18 years of age, is requesting donations from the public for building material such as cement, door and window frames, roof trusses and electrical components, among other items.

The home’s marketing manager, Raymond Madibogo said, “R700 000 has been raised to start building. We had initially been quoted R3.8 million but another contractor, Alpha Construction, quoted it for R1.5 million under Alpha Construction’s corporate social investment programme.”

Alpha Construction’s project manager, Wicus Saayman confirmed that the construction company will build the new boys’ residential unit. He added, “We wanted to get involved in this project… because New Jerusalem Children’s Home helps children.”

The residential unit will house 40 orphaned and vulnerable children in the home’s care who are currently not adequately sheltered for in a dormitory. The children are currently sleeping on bunk beds with no privacy and very little space. It will have bedrooms to house 40 boys and two house parents, sickrooms, homework and study areas, and an entertainment room with a TV and lounge room. The new building is expected to be officially opened on 9 August.

The home’s chief executive officer, Anna Mojapelo said she was happy about the new residential unit to be built. “I am at peace, happy and I can only thank all the men and women who answered our call for support and many who will be answering our request for sponsorship and donations towards completion of this building,” she said.
