A few hitches for Midrand residents registering for 2016 Municipal Elections

MIDRAND - Registration for the upcoming 2016 Municipal Elections took place on 5 and 6 March.

According to Ward 110 councillor Stephen Lamola, the voter registration weekend went off without a hitch in his ward. He said, “In Ward 110, greater Midrand and Ivory Park, there were no problems that were brought to my attention.”

In Ward 112, councillor Candice James said residents complained that the registration station in the form of a tent at the Swiss Club was moved to another location. She explained, “The tent was moved to a school on Albertyn and Andre Brink streets in Vorna Valley but there was no signage to let residents who wanted to register know of the change. Other complaints were that some voters had been confirmed on SMS number 32810 but not on the voters roll.”

James added that Kyalami Estates residents were signing a petition for a voting station to be set up in the estate.

A resident who was at the tent in Noordwyk on the corner of Lever and George streets, Majona Mofokeng, said it was important for people to register to vote and be part of the change in their communities. “Voting can give residents some say in how their area is governed, it helps with improving infrastructure.”

Details: Ward 110 councillor Stephen Lamola 082 838 1414; Ward 112 councillor Candice James 074 134 6459.
