Traffic light flashing for months was vandalised

MIDRAND – Resident Adrian Schofield complained of a traffic light that has been flashing red, allegedly for months, causing accidents at the junction of the R562 and Elevation Road in Randjesfontein.

He explained, “The robots at this junction have been out of order for three months, in spite of continually being reported… and in spite of numerous minor accidents during this period. The robots were recently repaired but they are back to flashing red again.”

He said the faulty traffic lights were first reported at the beginning of December 2015.

Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers explained, “Unfortunately, this traffic signal is not yet on our remote monitoring system which would immediately alert us to the fact that the signal requires repairs and, consequently, we are reliant on the reporting of these issues by active citizens.”

She revealed that, in this instance, the agency’s technicians went to the site and found that the reported controller had been vandalised and needs to be replaced. Peters-Scheepers said many traffic intersections city-wide are affected by vandalism and theft, the agency’s technicians will undertake the necessary repairs on the Randjesfontein traffic light during the week ending 6 March.

The agency has asked residents to escalate the reference number provided on any logged calls for traffic signals that are unattended within 24 hours so that appropriate action can be taken when teams are not responding to issues timeously.

“It is essential that traffic signals are repaired as quickly as possible to ensure traffic mobility and, among others, reduce the risk of collisions,”she added.
