Gauteng welcomes 301 leap year babies

JOBURG – The Gauteng Department of Health welcomed 301 babies born on this leap year's leap day on 29 February in all the provincial hospitals.

According to the department, the hospitals delivered 148 girls and 153 boys, and among the newborns, there were six sets of twins – two sets born at Charlotte Maxeke Academic, one at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic, two sets at Dr George Mukhari Academic and one at Jubilee hospitals.

Gauteng MEC for Health, Qedani Mahlangu, congratulated parents on the milestone of giving birth on the 29 February. “Giving birth is a milestone every parent looks forward to and, to give birth on a special day like… [29 February] or Christmas Day or New Year’s Day is extra special. Mothers, look after your babies and follow the road to health to the letter,” Mahlangu said.

She added that many parents, especially first-time mothers, said the day was exceptional as they gave birth to their first babies. “However, [this day] did not mean much to them and many said they intend to celebrate their child’s birthday every year on either 28 February or 1 March every year,” Mahlangu said.
